Elsa Loves Music

We have a collection of toddler friendly
instruments, and Elsa loves to use them to play along to music with her brother.  They do fight over who gets the (chop)sticks for the drum, and she does tend to claim all the hand bells for her own, but Daniel does not share the harmonica or other woodwind instruments with her, so I think its a fair thing. :)

Excitement for Books!

In the last week Elsa has come to be fascinated by books.  She used to have very little interest in them and primarily wanted to grab them or lick them.  This week she took great interest in Good Night Moon.  Her whole body shakes and she sort of pants.  She especially likes the full page span of the room with green walls and red carpet.  She is also enjoying a book that has a mirror on one of the pages.  With each page that is turned, she sighs when she sees herself in the colorful page.

We certainly do not spend an hour a day reading to her like we did to her brother at this age, but she is exposed to read alouds when she plays on the floor and I read to her brother, plus we have co-reading lap time with both kids at least once per day.   She gets two or three books each day alone with a parent.

Its so important for me to foster a love of print, art, and communication through written word for my children, and so I feel a lot of joy knowing she is taking to books.

I hope we will one day read books together and do a little mother/daughter book club!  This thought certainly is an encouragement when I read Who's Baby Is It? for the thirtieth time!

You've Got Busy Hands!

Elsie,

Something I notice about you that I didn't notice with your brother is how you are always touching!  You manipulate fabric all the time, reach for objects to hold, and pat many objects.  You grasp. You pinch. You touch, touch, touch.  Its interesting to me because you started this at two months and now as a four month old, I can count on you to be busy with your hands when you nurse.  You enjoy the different shirts I wear and seem to take note of different textures.  Your arms are getting long enough to reach past my collar bone and up to my face.  Its sweet to feel your gentle graze (or not so gentle whack!).  I am so curious to see how this sense develops into a talent for you.

I try to give you a variety of textures nearby, and it does seem to stimulate your activity.  The photos below have many different fabrics, and while you were swinging side to side you brushes the afghan and muslin blanket with your fingertips.

Love
Your Mama
