12 Months Walking Progress

Almost Walking Unassisted!

She doesn't walk with those push-toy walkers, she runs.
She doesn't take steps towards our open arms, she lunges and leaps.
She likes doing full squats to standing.
She likes standing in the middle of an open space and bouncing a bit.
But she is almost got the hang of solo walking.

Elsa Lately..

Has been spending most of her time on her feet, pulled up, and peeking around to see objects at new heights.

Fusses when going to take an afternoon nap and for bedtime, sometimes so obnoxiously so that her brother covers his ears and moans.

Is cutting a top tooth and enjoys toothbrush time.

Laughs, claps, and chatters, often saying her newest word Dad-gee! Da-da-da-gee!

Eats all foods I present to her, even tonight's dinner of Taco Soup, nachos and guac, and gooey butter cake.

Kisses pictures in books, usually babies or baby animals, but sometimes trucks or plants.

Goes through phases of not nursing well and biting to nursing perfectly and on a schedule.

Loves sippy cups.

Sits in front of the stove and chats at her reflection, then pulls up and shrieks at her reflection.

Weighs about 18 lbs and is 30 inches long.

Really likes shoes.  She likes shoes on her feet and on other's feet.  Laces fascinate her, and she enjoys chewing on shoes, too.

Cries dramatically when her brother takes toys away, smacks her, or makes loud noises.

Is the apple of our eye.

Marking Milestones....

I have the photos as proof, but I know I won't be able to have them for this post right now since I haven't edited them.

At 9 months exactly, Elsa started making her first real crawls.  She has attempted crawling and has wiggled and scooted her way around the floor for one month, but she took REAL crawls towards an object she wanted last week.  The object was a photo of herself, and she triumphantly grabbed it when she got to it!!

She said a new word last week, too.  Uh-oh! She even uses it in the right context.  She drops her spoon and says, "Uh-oh! Ah-oh!:"

Elsa clapped for the first time today, too.  Only twice, and then she went back to banging, which is more noisy and fun to do.

She has started to nurse less and less, now only taking 4 feedings a day.  She is getting very good at eating table foods, and her teeth are very sharp, so I am happy to reduce her nursing.

At her 9 month appointment on Friday she weighed 17 lbs, 10 oz, which is in the 27%.
She was 29.5 inches, which is in the 97%.
Her head was in the 80s for size.
She's growing well and there is little concern that her heart condition is adversely affecting her growth and development.

More Milestones: 6 Months

Elsa is moving and wiggling more each day.  She's not rolling much, which is what most babies do around this time.  Instead, she's lifting her bottom and digging her heels in the floor to push backwards.  She can travel some distance, and recently scootched almost off our bed this way!  She also is using her hands to paw around when she's on her belly, usually just turning, not really crawling anywhere.

Her balance has improved in the last week, so she's sitting pretty well now unassisted.  Its impressive that seven days ago she couldn't do this by herself at all!

Milestones!

Dear Elsa, sweet baby,

I think so often of things to write on your blog, but when your brother is down and you are awake, I choose to be with you instead of to get onto your blog to write.  I think you would approve of this decision!  You really crave my attention and seem to benefit so much from face to face time.

You are six months old now, and with that specific age come significant milestones for a baby.  First of all, you are a solid food eater.  Solid food is a bit of a stretch though, since your food really resembles pudding!  So far you have had an entire container of fancy organic brown rice cereal that you tolerated, half a box of Gerber white rice cereal that you think is delicious, fruit, and veggies.  Your favorite foods so far are (in this order) peaches, plums, applesauce, sweet potato and apples with cinnamon, pumpkin/squash/potato blend with nutmeg, butternut squash with apples, white potato/rutabaga/pumpkin with nutmeg and cinnamon, and then acorn squash/potato.  You do not like peas, and you tolerate carrot.  Soon I will introduce spinach and green beans. I am paying such close attention to the food to make sure I think its palatable, and trust me, it is! I often eat a few servings of your food after its roasted but not pureed, and its DARN GOOD.  I also try to sweeten up your foods a tad with apples, carrot, or mango and add spices to the other foods to make them enjoyable.  When you eat something you do not like (peas! oatmeal!) you make a surprised and disgusted face.  When you are eating something you love (fruit!) you smack your lips and giggle.  You slurp in your food and suck on your top lip, begging for more!  Its fun to feed you, darling.  You eat nearly three meals a day, in addition to your liquid diet of mommy's milk, which you have about six or seven times per day.

Another milestone is movement. You are wiggling more than ever, and your new trick is developing your leg muscles.  You are working your quads by lifting your bottom off the ground and keeping your feet planted.  Its a pilates move!  You are able to roll from your back onto your stomach, but you still do it rare circumstances.  In the last week you have been able to lift up more and seem to enjoy it, but usually you just reach your long arms to the side to grab what you want, and roll back onto your back.  You are kicking your legs more often in your bed, probably listening to and observing your kick's affect on the mattress.  You still move your left arm updownupdownupdown with rapid succession when you are excited and bored.   I often give you a toy for that hand to watch you bang.

You are making much more noise lately.  You seem to say UMMMMMMMMM when you are eating a good food, and you often groan or growl a bit during meal times.  You make a cough/clearing throat sound to indicate you are thirsty. You pant and giggle when its time to nurse and you get to do it.  You laugh and shriek when your brother comes in the room.  You love to be nearby to him so much! You two speak the same language, and that is of friendliness and squeals.  Your other main noise is this... WAIL! You are so dramatic when you are offended, startled, or mistreated.  The triple threat is when Daniel takes your toy, yells something too loudly, and then steps on your arm or another minor injury. You get so loud so fast!  And you pout, too.  Sometimes you are offended by loud noises, and other times you are offended by tardiness.  You get upset when I take too long to prepare your baby food or come to get you.

You've had a pretty nasty diaper rash as a consequence of starting foods (perhaps its the olive oil I use in roasting? we don't know) that means you get some diaper free time and extra baths with oatmeal.  You like both of these treatments!  I think once its healed, I'll do the same things for you just to make you happy.

I am reluctantly letting your infancy slip away, baby girl.  You are getting more personality, becoming more capable, and growing in size.  I loved you as a newborn and a small baby, and I am certain I'll love you when you no longer resemble a baby.  You do very much still look like a baby with your minimal hair, lack of teeth, adorable roundness, and happy demeanor.  I think you seem a bit younger than six months old to me, but that's probably just because it seems like you've been here less time because our days pass so quickly.  Its so hard for me to imagine you as a toddler, dancing with music or interacting with a book on my lap when I compare you to your older brother.  One day you'll be the one playing play dough and sharing your opinions.  But for now, you are content to watch the action around you and smile your way through life.  You are so pleasant and you are SO loved.

Goodnight, sweet heart.  Love Mama

A Full Roll Over!

Yesterday Elsie rolled from back to stomach by herself! She usually just rolls from side to side.  She had half an hour of independent play time while I was cooking and the guys were working in the garage.  I took a movie of it, too, and will upload it soon!

So... rolling over ... 5 months old.

Allllllllmost a Roller

Elsa seems to actively avoid rolling over.  She uses her long arms to grab and bat at whatever she wants to be closer to her.  She arches so far up and to the back that she's nearly doing a backbend, when its clearly easier to roll over.  When put on her belly, she usually shrieks a bit and then fusses.  Its not her favorite activity, that's for sure.  She is tolerating it better than ever before, and I notice she is good at lifting her head, feet, and legs.  She is also starting to push her bottom in the air and push her arms against the floor, and I can tell she doesn't know it yet, but she's learning about which muscles will help her to crawl!

Grabbing! Grasping! Playing!

You are purposefully reaching and getting toys to play with these days!

You are right on track, reaching milestones a little earlier than I expect.

You really enjoy these types of toys - ones with colors and crinkles and many parts to manipulate.

Its so fun to watch you grab for these toys and bring them close to your face.  Your little fingers pinch the material and hold onto it so tightly.

You don't just bat at the toy, you get the toy. I think you skipped the batting step and went from looking to grasping overnight!

You also seem to notice that toys look different from different angles, and this is a neat thing to watch.

So many neat-o things in your third month!

Milestone: Sleeping Through Night In Nursery!

Dear Elsa,

I am so proud of you! You slept all night, from 9 PM until 5:45 AM in your own bed in the nursery.  You slept in the room without your brother, who will share the room with you when he returns from his visit to my parents.  You slept with some soft white noise in the background, swaddled, and with a nightlight on.

I slept like a baby, too.  I felt like doing cartwheels for you because this is a big deal not having a night nursing time, but maybe I am over-excited and just had extra energy from all those hours of consecutive sleep.

I would love you just as much if you were a light sleeper who cried all night, but I am happy that you are the way you are.

Love, Mama

Grasping

This is the first time you held a toy.

We noticed your hands were unclenched and your fingers were flexing.
We let you explore your hands more with this ring of plastic keys.

It might have been a more fun experience for your parents than it was for you!  We were so excited about this developmental milestone for you.

Maybe if we had better toys than this silly ring of keys that unlocks nothing you would be more jazzed about it, too!

Milestone: Finding Hands

To tell the truth, I don't think I remember this milestone from DHH's babyhood.  Perhaps he didn't do this milestone!  But then, he can't be nearly two and not have found his hands.  And yet, I am pretty darn sure he didn't do this!

EK purposefully moves hands to her face and she sucks on them, noisily. Usually this means she is hungry!  To accomplish this feat, she must punch up and out of her swaddle (I admit to swaddling ineffectively the first few days of her new trick so I could see it!).

Here's a little video I took of this.  There is a noticeable lack of toddler here because DHH was at my parents' home.

Best Milestone So Far: Smiles!

Elsa,
You are four and a half weeks old and tonight when I picked you up for your middle of the night feeding, you gave me a great gift.  I'd been awake in bed, listening to you stir.  You were grunting, panting, and licking your lips, so I assumed you were very hungry and would want to get straight to business.  Instead, you looked up at me with a look of recognition and SMILED.  You grinned about a dozen times, each one a little bit different.  I exclaimed, and your dad got up to see you smile, too.  I hope you smile for him tomorrow because he isn't as alert in the middle of the night as I am (less practice!).

Your grin is toothless (of course) and actually close-mouthed, something that surprises me.  Its really cute.

Thanks for this present!
Love
Mama
